What is a Work Hours Calculator?

This work hours calculator runs directly in your browser and processes the calculation locally.

What can you use a Work Hours Calculator tool for?

You can use this calculator for work shifts, timesheets, payroll estimates, freelance billing, hourly work, part-time jobs, weekly schedules, overtime checks and project time tracking.

The calculator can calculate total hours worked, total break time, decimal hours, regular hours, overtime hours and estimated pay.

How work hours are calculated

The calculator subtracts the start time from the end time for each shift. Then it subtracts break time.

Example:

Start: 09:00
End: 17:30
Break: 30 minutes

Total time: 8 hours 30 minutes
Worked time after break: 8 hours

If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as an overnight shift.

Decimal hours

Decimal hours convert hours and minutes into a number format.

Examples:

  • 30 minutes = 0.5 hours
  • 45 minutes = 0.75 hours
  • 1 hour 15 minutes = 1.25 hours
  • 8 hours 30 minutes = 8.5 hours

Decimal hours are useful for timesheets, payroll, invoices and freelance billing.

Overtime calculation

You can enable overtime and choose when overtime starts.

For example, if overtime starts after 40 hours and you worked 45 hours, the calculator will count:

  • 40 regular hours
  • 5 overtime hours

If you add an hourly rate and overtime multiplier, the calculator can estimate regular pay, overtime pay and total pay.

Rounding work hours

Some workplaces round time entries to the nearest 5, 10, 15 or 30 minutes.

This calculator lets you choose whether to use rounding or keep the exact calculated shift duration.

If you are using the calculator for payroll, always follow your workplace rules and local regulations.
